The Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation Field Trip Grant Program helps bring students to outdoor sites where they can experience hands-on learning about Hawaiʻi's environment. Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation offers financial assistance to Hawaiʻi public schools which otherwise could not afford to participate in environmental field trips. Most field trip locations provide hands-on learning experiences for students grades K-12 and offer educational tours that can be customized to any grade level.
Puʻuhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park
Captain Cook, HawaiʻiGrade Levels Served: K-12
Visitors to Puʻuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park feel the spirit of peace and forgiveness that continues to surround and bless this special place. As you enter, the great wall rises up before you marking the boundaries between the royal grounds and the sanctuary. Many ki'i (carved wooden images) surround the Hale o Keawe, housing the bones of the chiefs that infuse the area with their power or mana. Pu'uhonua is located on the South Kona coast on the island of Hawaii. It contains about 420 acres of federal lands, including the coastal areas of two ahupua'a (land divisions), Honaunau and Keokea and the upland areas of the Ki'ilae ahupua'a. In addition to being the site of the pu'uhonua, the ahupua'a of Honaunau was the original seat of the chiefdom of Kona and the ancestral home of the Kamehameha dynasty.
