ʻĀINA Farm to School Field Trip for Educators
Last month, educators from around Oʻahu gathered at ʻĀINA School Kahuku Elementary, where Stephanie Loui, FoodCorps Service Member, and the ʻĀINA In Schools team led cooking, composting, and gardening breakouts. Teachers had the chance to get their hands dirty planting sunflowers in the Grade 1 garden beds, prepping green waste for compost and creating a Hawaiian Harvest Smoothie from featured local fruits and veggies. Teachers also enjoyed talking story about the evolution of the Kahuku Elementary ʻĀINA In Schools Program, along with the challenges and successes of building school community support around the gardens, and assembling their ʻĀINA Team. The field trip concluded at Kahuku Farms where teachers got to tour the farm’s organic plot and learn about companion plants as they transplanted seedlings in the raised garden beds of the Kahuku Farms Cafe. An excellent field trip destination, Kahuku Farms welcomes students and adults alike, and offers a delicious farm-fresh spread at their cafe.
