Earth Month ʻĀINA In Schools Chef & Farmer Visits & Kuʻi ʻAi Demonstrations

Mahalo to our partner chefs for sharing their passion for cooking healthy with locally sourced ingredients, and our farmer partners for sharing their passion for growing healthy food, during the month of April with ʻĀINA Chef and Farmer Visits! These talented chefs provided students the experience of seeing ingredients locally sourced and often times from their very own school garden turned into a healthy snack or meal.

  • Ahuimanu Elementary: Chef Sean Congdon of Cut Cuisine made Fresh Local Kale Salad with Ginger Miso Vinaigrette with first graders.
  • Blanche Pope: Chef and GoFarmer Haley Miyaoka made Zucchini Noodles with Marinara and Roasted Chickpeas with Kainalu Gr. 2 & Blanche Pope Grade 1, 2, and 3. Garden Club students will also engage in a kuʻi ʻai demonstration later this month.
  • Haleʻiwa Elementary: Chef Kathy Maddux of Mohala Farm introduced Breakfast Yogurt Parfaits to the Kindergarteners who got to assemble their own parfait with a variety of local and imported fruits and granola. Grade 4 students will also engage in a kuʻi ʻai demonstration later this month.
  • Kamaile Academy: Chef Shana of Tiers of Joy made garden fresh veggie hummus and fresh whole pineapple frozen treats with Kamaile fourth graders.
  • Lāʻie and Kahuku Elementary: Chef Willie Barrera of Iwa Eats made Beef Curry with ʻUlu Mash for Laie’s Annual ‘ĀINA Family Night, and Chef Wilie was a hit with a Kahuku Gr. 6 classroom visit with his Paʻiʻai Hummus and fresh veggies.
  • Solomon Elementary: Private Chef and school parent Jennifer Mychackavane, set up cooking stations at the year-end garden party for families to make summer rolls with freshly harvested garden veggies.
  • Sunset Beach Elementary: Chef Steph Loui, ʻĀINA In Schools Program Coordinator and Chef Susan Prior of The Country Eatery shared the table with Kindergarteners and First Graders making Garden Fresh Pesto served with fresh veggies. Chef Steph also provided Sunset families an opportunity to make their own Garden Fresh Pesto with Carrot Tops in parent-child teams at their ‘ĀINA Family Night. Students also engaged in kuʻi ʻai and shared their freshly made paʻi ʻai with their ʻohana.
  • Waiʻalae Public Charter School: Chefs Tiffanie Masutani and Chris Okuhara of La Tour Cafe, made Yogurt Parfaits with the first graders, with homemade granola.
  • Waiʻalae Public Charter School: Maria Carl, owner of 21 Degrees Estate and parent at Waiʻalae PCS visited with fourth grade students and shared about her family farm. After walking students through the steps of cacao processing, she also talked about beekeeping, animal husbandry, and the diverse agricultural practices happening on the farm. Finally, students got a taste of cacao nibs, as well as chocolate that came direct from Maria’s farm in partnership with Mānoa Chocolate!
  • Waialua Elementary: Chef Lamont Brown of Maya’s Tapas and Wine and a Gr. 6 parent made Cauliflower Ceviche and Maya’s Lemonade with local lemons.
