North Shore Youth Food Summit
North Shore Community Land Trust, in partnership with Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation and Johnson Ohana Charitable Foundation, are excited to announce the 3rd Annual Youth Food Summit which will be held at Waimea Valley on September 23rd from 8am to 2pm. The theme of this year's event is Food Waste. Students from grades 4-12 are invited to join us for a fun and educational day of field trips to local North Shore farms, fish ponds, and loʻi along with an afternoon of brainstorming about how school cafeterias can strive to become “zero waste”.
The first half of the day will provide students with the opportunity to discuss food waste issues with local farmers on a field trip to a North Shore farm. Students will then return to Waimea Valley after the field trips for an amazing locally sourced lunch prepared by Waimea Valley staff. During lunch, participants will have the opportunity to learn about a local elementary school that has worked hard to achieved the goal of a waste free cafeteria.
After lunch, Youth Summit participants will break into groups based on school affiliation to develop a Zero Waste Action Plan and implementation strategies with the goal of removing/recycling one waste stream by the end of the school year.
