Plastic Free Hawaiʻi Celebrates Earth Month

This Earth Month, staff and volunteers from the Plastic Free Hawaiʻi program offered education, activities, and merchandise at 11 events, including Earth Day/sustainability events at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, Kapiʻolani Community College, Punahou School, Honolulu Community College and more. On April 22, we hosted a booth at Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi’s Earth Day Cleanup Festival at Waimānalo Beach Park, which attracted 1,548 volunteers—only of the largest beach cleanups in history!

On Earth Day, April 22, Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation co-hosted a sold out Earth Day event at the SurfJack Hotel, featuring local food and a film screening of The Smog of the Sea, with our co-founder Jack Johnson along with Mark Cunningham, Kimi Werner, and Simon Beins on the post-film panel. On April 23, KHF staff Doorae Shin and Jaclyn Johnson and Kimi Werner were guests at another screening and talk story night at Turtle Bay’s Surfer [the Bar].

Mahalo to the Surfjack Hotel for its art installation raising awareness about plastic in the hotel industry and for eliminating single-use plastic water bottles from its hotel rooms.
