Tending to Sustainable Gardens
March 22, 2017
ʻĀINA In Schools partnered with Mālama Learning Center’s Hawaiʻi Green Collar Institute to provide professional development for 20 Leeward Coast educators at Camp Pālehua. Together, we engaged in hands-on learning and discussion around tending to sustainable school gardens. The course focused on the coconut rhinoceros beetle and invasive species prevention in the school garden. Workshop highlights included harvesting compost from the aerobic compost pile, bokashi composting, planting native Hawaiian plants, and cooking ʻuala leaves and koʻelepālau (sweet potato and coconut milk pudding). Mahalo nui to Mālama Learning Center, Camp Pālehua, and all the Leeward Coast educators who participated!
