Catch the Plastic Free Wave!

January 17, 2020

Collaboration was in the air this December as Plastic Free Hawaiʻi partnered with Bureo, Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi, Countercurrent Art, Turtle Bay Foundation, Hydroflask, and WSL PURE on the Plastic Free Wave to raise awareness and inspire solutions to plastic pollution! The collaboration included a two-sided mural made from plastic pollution, fishing nets, and reclaimed lumber by Ethan Estess and Mark Cunningham which was on display at the Billabong Pipeline Masters. Plastic Free Wave School Presentations engaged 821 public school students on the North Shore of Oʻahu in hands-on activities engaging participants about plastic pollution. Students were invited to print their own reusable canvas bags with Ethan Estess of Countercurrent Art, sing songs about the ocean, write Love Letters to the Sea, be resin code “detectives," play with a Jenga set made from recycled fishnets by Bureo and much more! Our team of stewards also provided hands-on community outreach during the 2019 Billabong Pipe Masters at ʻEhukai Beach Park and the Bishop Museum's Mai Kinohi Mai: Surfing in Hawaiʻi Exhibit Opening Night. Ethan Estess' Plastic Free Pipeline interactive sculpture will be on display at the museum through May 4 as part of this exhibit. This would be a great field trip!
