Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service - Solo Beach Cleanup
January 18th is Dr. King Jr. Day of Service! Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s actions not only led to the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, but hand-in-hand with these came the Clean Air Act in 1963, the Clean Water Act of 1972, and the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Dr. King recognized that the great movements of his time – civil rights and environmental justice – were inexorably linked. Interconnectedness is one of the most important principles of conservation: everything you do impacts others, and even small actions have big consequences.
As Dr. King said in his 1967 Christmas sermon:
“It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly… This is the way our universe is structured, this is its interrelated quality. We aren’t going to have peace on Earth until we recognize this basic fact of the interrelated structure of all reality.”
Since PFH wonʻt be able to hold our large scale annual MLK Jr. Beach Cleanup, we invite you to honor Dr. Kingʻs legacy and put stewardship into action! We encourage your keiki and their families to hold their own Solo Beach Cleanup to honor Dr. Kingʻs legacy!
